This definitely varies depending on the crowd and the event. I’ve found that the most enjoyable activities include, but are not limited to:
- Ring Toss – A classic backyard game loved by everyone.
- Outdoor Movie Night – This might be one of my favorites. Set up an outdoor projection, stack throw blankets, and add a pillow so everyone is cozy. This is definitely a crowd-pleasing activity!
- Cornhole – It’s fun, it’s easy, and perfect for a small cookout.
- Slip and Slide -It’s hot and humid, making this the ideal game to cool off.
- Water Ballon Fight – Hey, no matter how old I get, I will still enjoy a backyard water balloon fight.
- Make S’mores – Towards the end of the night, you can roast a few marshmallows over your fire pit. It’s a perfect way to end the night with a treat and is inexpensive.
- Musical Chairs – Another crowd’s favorite. You already have the chairs; all you need is some music.
Can You Host a Party in Your Backyard?
Short answers.. YES! Backyard parties are a popular choice during the summer months. They provide a relaxed setting for grilling and help save money by eliminating the need to rent a venue. Common outdoor celebrations include birthday parties, Memorial Day gatherings, Fourth of July festivities, bridal showers, graduation parties, and many others.
Backyard Party Ideas
1. Send Out Invitations
No matter the occasion, I always send out party invitations. I create all of my invites using Canva and send them out via text message. They offer a wide range of pre-made templates that you can use, and best of all, they are free! Additionally, you can find cute invitations available on Etsy.
2. Backyard Party Seating
Make sure you have enough seating for your guests. For outdoor parties, I find that foldable chairs and tables work best. They are easy to store and can be pulled out for any event. Plus, they are simple to clean if someone spills something. I always throw a cute table cover over the table to match my theme. If you have patio chairs and tables, that option works well too!
3. Backyard Lights
Create a cozy and fun ambiance with backyard lights. These will be perfect espeically when it starts to get a little dark outside.
4. Create a Drink Station
I love drink dispensers for parties! They are especially useful for outdoor gatherings. With the heat and humidity, everyone will appreciate having drinks readily available outside, so they don’t have to keep running in and out of the kitchen.
5. Cooler For Drinks
Speaking of drinks, make sure you also have a cooler. This cooler will keep your drinks cool for a long period of time.
6. Create A Grill Station
Create a food station where everyone can help themselves to food. What’s a backyard party without the grill lit with hot dogs and burgers?
7. Food Covers For Outdoors
I always keep food covers on hand. One thing I cannot stand is an outdoor party with bugs flying and sitting on my food, yuck. Haha! You can use reusable food cover tents, or if you have aluminum pans, purchase pans that come with covers.
8. Add Balloons and a Tent
If you need to add decoration to your backyard party, you can never go wrong with balloons. They’re easy to install and inexpensive. I always use my portable electric balloon pump; it saves me SO much time when setting up.
9. Good Playlist
What’s a party without good music? You have to have a good playlist to get everyone through the party!
10. Ice Cream Bar
Who doesn’t love ice cream? Especially in the warm weather, everyone would appreciate ice cream to cool them off. Grab some popular ice cream toppings such as hot fudge, caramel, nuts, candy, and fresh fruit.
11. Outdoor Movie Night
If you’re looking for entertainment, an outdoor TV projector will blow your guests away. It’s fun and perfect for any event towards the end of the night.
12. Build A Photo Area
What’s a party without taking pictures? You can use banners or build a cute backdrop.
13. Outdoor Bar Area
Strictly for those who are 21+ ;). This would be a cool build-out if you had this at your outdoor party! And I am sure a crowd-pleaser!!
14. Beer Pong
An affordable game that you can play with basic items. You can easily buy a Pong ball from Dollar Tree!
15. Create A Charcuterie Board
Themed charcuterie boards might be one of my favorite appetizers to bring to any party. They’re easy to prepare, and everyone loves them!

16. Cute Wooden Cutlery
The small details make all the difference. Wooden cutlery adds a polished touch to the BBQ party. Plus, any unused items can be saved for your next event!
P.S. If you prefer plastic utensils, place them in a cute bucket holder for an elevated touch, too!
17. Cornhall
A classic lawn game we all love to play. You can honestly create these cornhall boards yourself. I found this easy beginner-friendly tutorial on TikTok!
