If you want to save time, money, and reduce stress, keeping an organized pantry is essential. Being able to find what you need quickly makes meal prepping and creating grocery lists much more efficient.
Additionally, having your food visible and accessible helps prevent food waste, which is a significant concern for me.
It’s upsetting to think about how much food I’ve wasted because my pantry was disorganized.
Plus, who doesn’t appreciate a visually appealing kitchen?
What Are Common Pantry Mistakes?
Common small pantry mistakes include ignoring vertical spacing, not using containers and labels, creating systems that don’t align with your lifestyle, and overbuying without utilizing items.
To avoid these mistakes, make your items visible by using clear containers. This approach can help you stop overbuying and implement an organizational system that works for you.

How To Organize A Small Pantry?
1. Create A Plan And Research
The first step to successfully organizing your kitchen pantry is creating a plan! Personally, I am going to do allll the research and gather inspo before I start any project.
Planning and researching reduce stress and make it easier to initiate and complete a task.
So, give yourself a pat on the back, because you’re currently in step 1!
How do you envision your pantry? Measure your space and purchase the pantry organization products you’ll need, so you can get started!
2. Empty Everything Out
Now that you’ve gathered inspiration for your pantry and purchased your products, it’s time to empty the pantry.
Make sure to dust and wipe down the shelves thoroughly. This is also a good time to check for any expired food items and dispose of them!
3. Categorize & Group Similar Items
A smart solution for quickly locating your items is to categorize and organize them into groups. For example:
- Group your canned goods together.
- Keep baking supplies in one area.
- Place snacks together in another area.
- & breakfast items in a separate section.
This approach has saved me a lot of time and helped me avoid overspending.
4. Don’t Forget To Declutter
Now is the time to declutter your space. To avoid wasting food, consider donating any unopened and unneeded food items.
There have been many times when I bought something I thought I would enjoy, but ended up not eating it. If that’s the case for you, go ahead and donate it!
Let’s face it, if you haven’t eaten it by now, you probably won’t. It’s time to refresh your environment and stop hoarding items that create clutter.
Unless absolutely necessary, there’s no need to keep duplicates of anything.
5. Buy Clear Containers Or Jars
Clear containers not only save space but also enhance the aesthetics of your pantry. I’m obsessed with clear containers.
These stackable, airtight containers are ideal for small pantries, as they maximize vertical space and make it easy to see when you are running low on food.
Once you have your clear containers, it’s time to transfer your dry goods, such as pasta, rice, or flour, into them. Their airtight design keeps your food fresh!
6. Make Sure You Label Everything!
My favorite tip for keeping a tidy and organized pantry is labeling! Simple, easy-to-read labels make a significant difference in maintaining order.
Plus, they help everyone in the household stay organized, especially the less tidy boyfriends, haha!
7. Maximize Your Pantry By Adding Shelf Risers
These tiered organizers in my pantry are a lifesaver! They allow me to see everything at a glance and have created so much extra space in my small pantry cabinet.
They can instantly double your storage space. I use them for canned goods and spices.
8. Small Pantry Ideas: Utilize Baskets or Bins
If you’re not a fan of the clear containers, you can always opt for baskets or bins. Either way, some food items will require a basket or bin. I’m obsessed with woven baskets.
9. Be Sure To Maximize Your Vertical Space
I prefer to use over-the-door organizers and hooks for lightweight items. Sheleving is also another great option! You can store extra trash bags, aluminum foil, ziplock bags, and parchment paper on the door; it’s a lightweight solution that clears up space in other kitchen cabinets.
10. Do A Weekly Reset
To maintain an organized pantry, it’s helpful to set aside just 5 to 10 minutes for tidy-ups once a week.
I designate Sunday mornings to review all my pantry items and prepare my grocery list for the week.
This keeps me organized and reduces the chances of buying items I already have… Something, I’m ashamed to admit, I’ve done countless times, hahah!
Consistent upkeep can transform even the smallest space into a well-organized and stress-free storage area.
